Crunch Time
You owe a demon one pound of flesh. You have 16 hours a day. Get to work.
A Pound of Flesh — taken literally
The jam theme is a Merchant-of-Venice flesh bond, so we wrote the flesh bond.
You signed something. You did not read it. Mara did - she is a demon, it is her contract, and she is here to collect. Not your soul, not your firstborn: 454 grams of muscle. One pound. Exactly.
She is not going to cut it off you. That would be quick, and she is enjoying this. You are going to build it - rep by rep, day by day, while she leans on the doorframe and comments on your form.
The debt meter in the HUD reads 0 / 454 g (1 lb) from the first second of the game. That is the whole plot.
⚠ CONTENT WARNING
CRUNCH TIME is a flirty, suggestive PG-13 comedy about a burnt-out indie dev who owes a demon a literal pound of flesh. Expect cheeky humour, mild innuendo, a demon in a bikini, and a lot of jokes about crunch. No explicit content, nothing graphic.
The end-of-game reward screen ships a deliberately censored placeholder - a pixelated silhouette behind bars reading "NSFW SCENE / ARTWORK PENDING" - marking where a future illustration would go. No explicit art ships in this build.
The same warning is shown on the title screen and again in Settings, before you can start a game.
Disclamer
Almost none of the raw material was made during the jam. We had been working in this project before but was an abandoned sandbox, the jam was a good incentive to ressurect and deploy. What happened in the 7 days was assembly, adaptation to the theme, overall polishment.
- The art is the weakest part, and we know it. We never got to do a proper art pass on the main girl, no purpose-drawn poses, no real outfits, no expressions beyond a blink. The date outfits, the app icon and the "reward" card are all derived from that one illustration or placeholders. That's the honest gap in this build.
- Everything else is off-the-shelf, openly licensed work by other people: LPC character spritesheets, Kenney UI and sound effects, game-icons.net icons, the Fredoka typeface, public-domain Scott Joplin rags for the rhythm game, and Creative Commons backgrounds and music. Full attributions are below — several are CC-BY / CC-BY-SA and are required, not courtesy.
- The mechanics are deliberate homages, not original designs. Idle economy from AdVenture Capitalist, screen structure from Crush Crush, and each minigame is a small tribute to an existing one (Douchebag Workout, Being a DIK, DDR, QWOP, anagram games, Concentration).
Credits
Full per-asset licences and the complete attribution text is readable in game: gear icon > SETTINGS > CREDITS > SHOW.
Nothing in this game is AI-generated. Every asset is either original art licensed to the project, a real FOSS download, or a transform of one.
